Thing-a-Thon A Mammoth Singing Marathon Sunday 13th December 1987 |
|
(L to R) Stephen, Clare, Paul, Mark and Joe McGann I believe this is the only time all five siblings have performed together on stage. |
Session 3: Neil Bartlett, Gaye Brown and Philip Paul, Elaine Delmar, (5 - 7pm) Daniel Day Lewis, Billy Geraghty, Liam Grundy, Carol Sloman, Emma Freud, Bob Harris and Kathy Louis, Gloria Hunniford, David Kernan, 'Les miserables' Company, Lulu and the 'Peter Pan' Company, The McGanns, Ian McKellen, Sarah Jane Morris, 'The Phantom of the Opera' Company, Lily Savage, Hank Wangford and Ruby Wax. Session 4: Cass Allen, Alan Bates, Madeline Bell, Christopher Biggins, (7.30 - Billy Bragg, 'Chess' Company, John Christie, Ronnie Corbett, 10pm) Julie Covington, Erasure, Fenella Fielding, 'Follies' Company, Samantha Fox, Claire and Leonard Friedman, Adelaide Hall, Lesley Joseph and Patricia Hodge, Helen Lederer, Maureen Lipman, Mass Carib, Nicola McCauliffe, Sylvester McCoy, George Melly, Anton Rodgers, Ned Sherrin, Labi Siffre and Carol Woods. Paul appeared on stage singing with Daniel Day Lewis and friends, then re-appeared with his brothers and sister Clare. They were excellent on stage and obviously enjoyed performing together. My enduring memory of this was what happened as they were about to leave the stage though. All acts, as they left, were introducing the following artist. So as they left the stage Mark stated that "the following act needs no introduction, so I'm not going to"! He left the stage and a very disgruntled Ian McKellen appeared. He was less than amused, which made the audience laugh. Mark then re-appeared, said "It's Ian McKellen" and walked off! Apologies for the quality of the photographs here - they were taken by me with my small instant camera and almost got me ejected from the theatre by an over zealous security guard! |

The Thing-A Thon, held at the Picadilly Theatre in London's West End, was a truly unique event and one I feel honoured to have attended. In October 1987 a meeting was held by The Terence Higgins Trust, a leading Aids Charity, for members of Equity (the actors union). They were asking for help in raising money for two 'Aids' charities - The Terence Higgins Trust and Frontliners, an organisation of 'people with aids helping other people with aids'. The response from the performers was a commmitment to stage a series of shows to raise a target of £100,000. The Thing-a-Thon, organised by Su Pollard, was the first of these shows. It was staged from 12 noon til 10.30pm and was split into four sessions, allowing the theatre to be filled four times - tickets were £5 each and allowed admission to a specific session. Included in the line-up were casts of several West End shows of the time. Below is the running order that appeared in the programme. It stated that 'all artists will appear subject to availability'. I can't be certain as to the appearance of all the acts, though I know most were there - Billy Bragg appeared in the 3rd session, which I had a ticket for, not the fourth as was billed. Session 1: Juliet Alderdice, Eileen Atkins, British Airways Groovers Steel (12 - 2pm) Orchestra, Miguel Brown, Cantabile, 'Girlfriends' Company, Half Moon Panto, 'Les Liaisons Dengereuses' Company, Paul Medford, National theatre Company, 'Nunsense' Company, 'On The Other Hand', Fay Presto, 'String of Pearls' and Dilys Watling. Session 2: Michael Ball and Angela Richards, Debbie Bishop, 'The Compulsives', (2.30 - 'Eastenders' cast, '42nd Street', 'Girls and the Great Xar', Hue and 4.30pm) Cry, Kenny Lynch, Claire Rayner, Sinitta, 'Starlight Express' Company, Peter Straker and Helen Terry. |

This was an aids benefit concert held at Leicester Haymarket Theatre on 15th January 1989. Organised by Michael Brogan (who was starring in Eastenders at that time) it starred the likes of Ian McKellen, Sylvester McCoy, Ned Sherrin, most of the Eastenders cast and most of the Guys and Dolls cast (who were appearing at Leicester at that time.) The concert itself raised over £8,000, and collections were also taken after every Guys and Dolls performance for the following week |
